HUGE default webpage file

tech, work

Did you ever see a very simple front-page of a website which consists of one logo and 17 banners?

And all the banners are made of:
Size: 800 x 108 pixels
Horizontal Resulution: 72 dpi
Vertical Resolution: 72 dpi
Bit Depth: 24

If the main html file of the website is default.htm, how big will the default.htm file? 10K? 30K? 50K?…

You will not be wrong if you pick any of the numbers… Even if you said 100K… you are still on the right path…

If you display the webpage on your browser, how much of data  will be downloaded to your PC? It should be less than 700K right?… the index.htm + 1 logo + 17 banners… yea, less than 700K or 0.7MB should be sufficient.

But will you believe if is said the size is 5.16MB or to be exact 5,419,008 bytes? Yes… i type it correctly… 5.16 Mega Bytes… Yes it is five point one six mega bytes!!!

You don’t believe me yea?… well its ok… if you were the one telling me this stuff, I won’t believe you too.

Ok, let me tell you about it, I was troubleshooting a slow network again today…
After some emailing with the ISP, I check the content of the website… the front-page of the website… to my horror… this is what I found… an index file with the size of 5.16MB!!! UNBILIEVEABLE!!!

So, I reported that to the system people… When they came back to me, they told me there are 4,680,471 lines in that file!!!… yes… 4 MILLIONS!!!… The page supposed to display one logo and 17 banners only and hyper-linking each of them to their respective sites. UNBILIEVEABLE!!!

CIO Conference

work

I was attending a conference in the past 2 days… 3 – 4 July 2007. Its for the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the State Government Departments & Agencies. The theme is eGovernment for eService Delivery. I was attending as an ICT participant… so I’m not a CIO 🙂 It was held in The Pacific Sutera, Sutera Harbour Resort, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The resorts consist of resort, golf, marina, spa and country club.

The ‘i’ in the iGoverment represents information, innovative and intelligent. And the ‘e’ in the eService represents excellent, efficient and effective.

There were 9 papers presented. Five papers were presented on the first day and 4 papers on the second day. Most of the papers presented are very relevant… except for 1 or 2 papers which are more on commercial or promotions of products… the products are either I already using or having the same product with other operator or brand.

During the Panel Discussion Session, I really like… or excited with the last word from one of the panel… from the Director (Sabah & Labuan Region) of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) when he shared about the launching of a new office of one of the country’s cellular operator, DiGi. The new DiGi’s office consists of only 1 large room or hall. Inside the ‘hall’ are tables and chairs… only!… and WiFi!. They do not have rooms but one single large hall. Anyone can ‘park’ at any of the table to do their works… including the CEO, not exempted! Everyone carries their own notebook… wow, that is soooo cool yea… imagine that!

After 2 exhausting days of workshop… we will continue with the CIO Meeting tomorrow!!! I will attend as an observer for the CIO Meeting in the morning… then, after lunch, I will be attending the Technical Meeting…. waaaa….

Here are the pictures I’ve taken. I used my Casio Exilim EX-S500, so don’t expect very good quality pictures…

My colleagues… they are camera shy!

The conference’s brochure and handouts.

Visit to Beaufort

food, work

Today I went to Beaufort to fix the network at our branch office. We started our journey around 9am. We stop over at Papar district for a drink. We stop over at a place called ‘pasar’… it is actually a food court.

On the table are packets of ‘keropok’.

My drink…. ‘teh o ping’…. iced tea! 🙂

yummy…. my food…. ‘roti kosong’.

Pricing for ‘bakso’…. food originated from Indonesia I think. It was in one of the game in the 1st AXN Amazing Race Asia.

A boy enjoying his bakso…. too bad, I didn’t took the bakso picture.

ISO 9001:2000

work

My office was visited by an auditor from SIRIM to audit our ISO9001:2000

I was quite nervous since this is the first time i’m receiving an auditor for ISO9001:2000. It is not that i’m worried with what he’s going to ask… i’m just worried that we will not comply with our ISO9001:2000 documents.

Well, it turn out not so bad… i think we manage to answer all the questions… we explained… although we have documents which is maybe in a mess, but we did answers with our points and reasonings… we tell the truth… we never hide anything… if we fail because of telling the truth, i think that will be more satisfactory then telling lies and fail… 🙂 Anyway, by telling the truth and accepting your mistakes, you somehow learn new things… the auditor actually tell us why and how… so, with that we will improve our delivery system to comply with our ISO9001:2000

And the best part is… it’s over… what a relief… then later, i receive an sms from a colleague asking how was it since he was audited before me… looks like everyone experience the same and feels the same.

Exchange Server Part 1 – Shut Off

work

I got a call from my boss about 2 days ago, that was 7 February 2007, around… let me check my incoming call history… aaaa… it was 8.12am for about 2min 16sec conversation… he was asking why he can’t logon to the network… i tried to help him out… but unsuccessful… i was in the bathroom… yea, i bring my phone with me when i take my bath… lol… i carry my phone everywhere, life is uncomfortable without it… i told him i will ask someone to look into his problem since i’m not in the office yet.

Called my staff… damm… the phone must be unplugged… they use if for modem sometimes. ringing but no one picking it up… and nowdays, i think Telekom put an answering machine on each land line. i called my staff HP.

When i reached the office, they told me there is problem with the exchange server… the mail server… the lifeline server… DAMMM… it was the beginning of a busy day… for 2 days… and that is why i created this blog.
