Reading Tutor

education

From experience, to make kids involved with something is not that very hard… the most important is to put something together with it and they do need tutoring… guidance.

For instant reading… kids will not be interested in reading if we put it straight-up to them in plain way. Kids just loves to play, so one way to make them interested in reading is to include it with some interesting stuff… like games… pets maybe… pictures… images… objects… you just have to be creative… learning must be enjoyable… even adults will get bored if the subject presented to them are presented in a boring way!.. Believe me, I’ve attended so many presentations… I can imagine how kids felt if they are put in the same situation…

SCORE is one place where kids will not get bored while learning. SCORE is like reading tutors the children. They have a unique method for kids to catch up, keep up, and get ahead in their studies and to help them achieve their goals and reach their academic potential in math, reading, spelling and writing. Every kid is treated individually based on their ability because not all kids have the same abilities.

Boeing X-48B

tech

I’m always fascinated with new gadgets especially its appearance and features… which I always refer as RADICAL. The experimental aircraft from Boeing, X-48B, is one example. The image on the left shows its first flight at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center in Edwards, California on July 20, 2007.

The X in front of the model number represents experimental… so, whenever you see an X in-front of any aircraft model (build by US), it means it still being ‘experimented’… not for production yet… I learned this from National Geographic 🙂

The X-48B resembles like a flying wing… no cylindrical fuselage like the normal aircraft. It is more like the Stealth Bomber B1 from USAF… aka BAT-WING. The other bat-wing is the Stealth Fighter F117A… which I see not really bats-like fighter jet but aircraft with lots of sharp edges. The sharp edges and the bats-wing design which make it stealth actually going against the aviation principles… so it is very RADICAL… it’s not supposed to be able to balance itself once airborne… but require thousands of computer instructions to stabilize it… and makes it the deadliest jet fighter.

Kundasang Trip

blog, work

At last, got some time to post today… life is so busy…

I was outstation to Kundasang last week, 19th – 20th July 2007. Me and my 2 colleagues went there to present 3 systems for our office management meeting… we brought along quite a number of gadgets… unfortunately there was no internet service out there… well, we are almost at the foot of Mount Kinabalu. We stayed at Zen Garden Cabin & Restaurant. Since there were 3 of us, we took a big room with 3 beds.

Unfortunately, when we entered our room, there were only 2 beds. Worse, no in-house phone service and we don’t know what their phone number is… it was pre-arrange by the secretariat. So, my colleague has to walk downhill to the reception. Then later we found out two of the ceiling light are not working, no shower curtain and no floor mat to dry our feet… later the bath room get wet all over… but we cant be bother with that anymore… we were so tired… what the heck… but I’m not saying the place is bad… it’s actually very nice.

We started our journey from KK around 10am+… I drove my car… and claim for transportation service since I used it to ferry my 2 colleagues and the gadgets. We actually over-shoot the hotel junction which is just next to the Kundasang market ground… we only realize that when we were getting closer to Ranau. At last we made a U turn at almost 9KM to Ranau… wasted about 30KM!!! KK to Kundasang is like almost 100KM… we reach the hotel around 1pm+… just on time for lunch… we walk-in quietly and join the rest for the lunch. The rest arrived yesterday since they have a conference on the first day. Our presentation is on the second day around 2pm… that’s why we only come today. . . . Continue Reading »

IDrive-E Online Backup

blog

If you are using multiple PCs at different location, I’m sure you have ever wished you can have access to your files at your home or office PC. Or wished you can backup your files somewhere outside your PC… and accessible online & safe.

Well, if you really ever wished for all that, your wishes have been granted because there is a service on the internet right now providing backup and restore service called IDrive-E Online Backup.

For a start, IDrive-E offer up to 2GB of free online backup space without any backup and restore restriction or bandwidth limits or file type restrictions… free without any catch!

If you are worried about the security of your files at IDrive-E, worry no more because all your files are encrypted. During the uploading or downloading process, your transmissions are encrypted with 128-bit SSL. And all files stored in IDrive-E are encrypted with 256-bit AES with a user defined key. This key is not stored anywhere on IDrive-E servers.

Managing your files is as easy as “drag n drop”, the same way how you use your Windows Explorer. You can directly add your files or folders from Windows Explorer to your IDrive-E. Backing-up are automated with no complicated scheduling procedures. Backup features are as good as high-end server based backup software. You can control your backup with versioning backup, incremental backup, mapped drive backup, sync etc.

And when you are satisfied with IDrive-E (which I believe you will) and needed more than the 2GB free backup space, you can always subscribe with its unlimited storage space with a very small fee.

Cold or Warm Water?

blog, health, life

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.

Do you know that the Chinese and Japanese drink hot green tea with their meals? You seldom or never see them drinking cold water.

There is a good logical explanation about that… and it is a good one… maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating.

It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this “sludge” reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and may lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks – You should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.

You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let’s be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive.

If anyone who know and shares this with others, at least one life could be saved… You could save a life!

HUGE default webpage file

tech, work

Did you ever see a very simple front-page of a website which consists of one logo and 17 banners?

And all the banners are made of:
Size: 800 x 108 pixels
Horizontal Resulution: 72 dpi
Vertical Resolution: 72 dpi
Bit Depth: 24

If the main html file of the website is default.htm, how big will the default.htm file? 10K? 30K? 50K?…

You will not be wrong if you pick any of the numbers… Even if you said 100K… you are still on the right path…

If you display the webpage on your browser, how much of data  will be downloaded to your PC? It should be less than 700K right?… the index.htm + 1 logo + 17 banners… yea, less than 700K or 0.7MB should be sufficient.

But will you believe if is said the size is 5.16MB or to be exact 5,419,008 bytes? Yes… i type it correctly… 5.16 Mega Bytes… Yes it is five point one six mega bytes!!!

You don’t believe me yea?… well its ok… if you were the one telling me this stuff, I won’t believe you too.

Ok, let me tell you about it, I was troubleshooting a slow network again today…
After some emailing with the ISP, I check the content of the website… the front-page of the website… to my horror… this is what I found… an index file with the size of 5.16MB!!! UNBILIEVEABLE!!!

So, I reported that to the system people… When they came back to me, they told me there are 4,680,471 lines in that file!!!… yes… 4 MILLIONS!!!… The page supposed to display one logo and 17 banners only and hyper-linking each of them to their respective sites. UNBILIEVEABLE!!!

Redmond gives 3 years warranty for Xbox 360!!!

microsoft, tech, teched, techedsea2007, xbox

o my gawwddd… I can’t believe it… buying a game console is as good as buying a car… 3 years warranty!!!

Microsoft or Redmond got fade up with unacceptable hardware failures in its new generation game console Xbox 360 has decided to extend the warranty to EVERYONE… old and new box… cool… Redmond says:

“As of today, all Xbox 360 consoles are covered by an enhanced warranty program to address specifically the general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights on the console. This applies to new and previously-sold consoles. While we will still have a general one year console warranty (two years in some countries), we are announcing today a three-year warranty that covers any console that displays a three flashing red lights error message. If a customer has an issue indicated by the three flashing red lights, Microsoft will repair the console free of charge-including shipping-for three years from the console’s purchase date.”

3 flashing red lights?… is there a “backdoor” for that… say, if I have 2 flashing red lights, can I make it 3 flashing red lights instead…LOL…

Redmond will take a pretax charge of more than $1 billion to repair defects in its next- generation game machine…. wow… estimate of USD$1 billion for repairing alone? pretax?… damm… how much are they making for the consoles anyway huh…???

And, sure there gonna be another Xbox 360 & PC Halo competitions in this coming TechEd SEA 2007!!!… wanna collect some Microsoft T-Shirts 😉
