IDrive-E Online Backup
blog July 17th, 2007If you are using multiple PCs at different location, I’m sure you have ever wished you can have access to your files at your home or office PC. Or wished you can backup your files somewhere outside your PC… and accessible online & safe.
Well, if you really ever wished for all that, your wishes have been granted because there is a service on the internet right now providing backup and restore service called IDrive-E Online Backup.
For a start, IDrive-E offer up to 2GB of free online backup space without any backup and restore restriction or bandwidth limits or file type restrictions… free without any catch!
If you are worried about the security of your files at IDrive-E, worry no more because all your files are encrypted. During the uploading or downloading process, your transmissions are encrypted with 128-bit SSL. And all files stored in IDrive-E are encrypted with 256-bit AES with a user defined key. This key is not stored anywhere on IDrive-E servers.
Managing your files is as easy as “drag n drop”, the same way how you use your Windows Explorer. You can directly add your files or folders from Windows Explorer to your IDrive-E. Backing-up are automated with no complicated scheduling procedures. Backup features are as good as high-end server based backup software. You can control your backup with versioning backup, incremental backup, mapped drive backup, sync etc.
And when you are satisfied with IDrive-E (which I believe you will) and needed more than the 2GB free backup space, you can always subscribe with its unlimited storage space with a very small fee.

I would be interested to hear what you have thought of the service. I have tried a myriad of backup schemes and have had success with a lot of them. I recently came across i-drive through another blog. I think as internet speeds increase these types of backups are really going to catch on. It’s sooo convenient!

I did try one similar product some time ago when my internet speed was still crawling. And because of the speed, I was turned-off.
Although I use IDrive-E for less than a week and currently my internet connection at home is less than 800Kbps (at best efforts), I can say that I am satisfied with the backup & restore speed.
Personally after using & testing the service, I hope difficulties connecting to the server through firewall can be sorted-out. Since my office is using firewall and I have no control over it (not like at home, I can have access to the firewall), I hope there will be a work-around on this issue soon so that I can connect to the server from the office. But I still believe this is a nice service to backup your files outside your PC…and have access to it from anywhere.
